John Mayall was an important man in my youth and I'm sure he did mean every thing. Probably deflecting the unbearable loss of his own English music/ethnicity which had been stolen, mangled and debased by the upper middle class coterie led by Cecil Sharp and Lord Reith, through their new media of free education and national television. Or maybe he was mourning the loss of Eric...

and on Cliff Richard - my cringe equivalent of this is Lonnie Donegan. I loved his skiffle and was abit too young to folow the local skiffle groups but when he sang My Ole Man's a Dustman to the Queen televised into every home from the Royal Variety Performance at the London Palladium my own unaware forelock tugging was nocked clean out of my system. The man was relaxedly proud of being working class. I had been brought up in a deep culture of deference - that sapped my youthful vitality and pride.

The picture in the CD roundel is of the WW2 Kinder Transport. This is how Mel's mum escaped the Nazi's.

Fashionable and exciting but, despite the presence of the godlike 'Class War' by The Dils, lacks the presence of anyone with real a pair of blue shorts with pink stripes e.g. Bog People, Grazdanskaja Oborona, The Cosmopolitans, Ton Steine Scherben, Poison Girls, G.F. Fitz-Gerald, Bing Selfish, Gordon Solie Motherfuckers etc.

Virtually all of my AD4 selection I chose firstly cos the music works (for me at least) - and then having lyrics, either subtle or overt, that give rise to a thought or two makes it all work twice over. I am a musician and the music is where I start when I listen to something new - I know that's not the case for everyone. Still - there are a lot of words on ths site and as yet no music. Not good. I shall see what can be done.
